Proton Pump Inhibitors - Acid Reflux Drug

Proton pump inhibitor is a prescribed acid reflux drug. It works by reducing the acidity of the stomach contents through inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for acid secretion. The working mechanism is some what similar to H2 blocker but it claims to relief acid reflux symptoms faster than H2 blocker. It also claims to heal esophagitis and prevent complications of acid reflux. This is something other drugs are not good at doing.

Being a prescribed acid reflux drug, proton pump inhibitors are usually used when symptoms of acid reflux are severe and when there is damage to the esophagus lining. Doctors are using more and more of such acid reflux drug because it provides strong acid suppression. This is a quick way to help relieve the symptoms and thus allow the damaged esophagus tissues to get a chance to heal.

Examples of proton pump inhibitor are omeprazole (Priolosec) and lansoprazole (Prevacid).

Some of the known side effect of proton pump inhibitors include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. But these side effects are not very common. This acid reflux drug should not be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers. However, proton pump inhibitor appears to be safe for children with severe acid reflux.
