Difference Between Heartburn And Heart Attack

One of the most common symptom of acid reflux disease is chest pain or heartburn. It is an unpleasant burning sensation in the chest. However, such feeling is similar to heart attack and some people mistaken heart attack as heartburn. This can be very dangerous since heart attack is a much more serious problem. As such, it is very important for you to know whether acid reflux or a more serious heart condition such as heart attack is causing your chest pain.

To make the matter worse, both heart attacks and acid reflux can take place after a heavy meal. This makes it more difficult to differentiate the two. It is also possible to have both heartburn and heart attack at the same time. It has been reported that some patients with coronary artery disease may develop anginal chest pain due to acid reflux. One possible explanation is that the acid in the esophagus may activate nerves that temporarily impair blood flow to the heart.

Despite of the similarities between heartburn and heart attack, there are nevertheless, some differences. Below is a summary of the differences:

- Heartburn from acid reflux usually continues for hours.

- The pain from heartburn can be relieved with antacid or H2 blockers. (If the medications do not relieve the symptom within 10 - 15 minutes, call 911)

- The heartburn usually increases and decreases with the intake of certain foods – especially oily foods.

- For heart attack, any exertion will make you feel that your heart is going to burst.

- Heart attack is usually accompanied with shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, fainting, weakness.

- Paid due to heart attack usually radiate from the chest to the back, jaw or arms whereas paid from acid reflux is usually retrosternal pain, without lateral radiation.

In any case, if you are unsure whether you are suffering from acid reflux or heart attack, it is always wiser to seek medical help.
